ABOUT KALICOS

Started with a Hobby

When I couldn't sleep, I began searching for non profits in my area.

I was surprised how many were close to me that I had never heard of. Then I searched Denver and Boulder and found hundreds more.

There are actually over 20,000 non profits in Colorado and 1.6 million in the United States.

Every non profit helps the community in a unique way and I wanted to create a website that focuses on how we could help each one.

I started plotting each one on a map and visiting as many as I could. I signed up as a volunteer to see what the process was like. I also checked out their wishlist and dropped items off when I was in the area. This was such a rewarding hobby. Everyone was nice that I met and eager to share more about the organizations.

I hope the map continues to grow and becomes a useful resource for people wanting to learn more about what they can do to make a difference.

Code for Boulder got involved in 2016 and is designing a search feature that would make the map even easier to use.
